She hated this city; it was dirty and smelly and full of bad memories. Bloody memories. Dark, twisted things that made her skin crawl and her stomach turn. Revolting things that would keep a sane person awake late hours and away from here, their source.
So why was she here? Because it was a place she knew, someplace she could blend, hide - hunt and flee without needing to learn new places. The same reason a bear or mountain lion returned to the same range over and over; because it was familiar. And Familiar was comforting, despite the past pains.
She sat on the roof of the dilapidated apartment building, listening to the sounds around her. Car horns, some gun shots - the song and pulse of New York. It took some getting used to, but it was a comforting lullaby, in a twisted way.
Somewhere below her, she could hear the bums, the squatters in the abandoned apartments - she had seen them, but avoided them easily to get to the roof. She'd had to use her claws to get partway here - so she doubted the druggies were likely to follow. She had a little peace - for now.

Of course, someone always has to mess up plans don't they? Like Malcolm Xavier. Really he was just going for a walk, but he felt a mind that was similar to... Logan. James Howlett wasn't in New York City. He was at SMMO HQ or the nearby school! (Though he thought that the first was more likely, with Tori and all). So ofcourse, Shadow Mind had to go explore. His gate was smooth as he moved close to the building, and in jeans and a T-shirt, lifted himself up easily.
He didn't even have to think really. He knew how to lift himself with his mind. That was easy. Always had been. He knew he was dangerous. Anyways, he stopped when he got to the edge of the building, and stepped onto it. "Hello!" he was cheery as always, his grin was infectuous though. At least usually. "'M Mal. Malcolm, mal. What ever. Or maybe Colm? Never been called that." he was babbling a bit, though he already had a sheild up.
There were similarities between Logan and the girl. Both were short, brown hair, and that animal feel. Dangerous, deadly, and rather cute if you weren't pissing them off. "Before you try to kill me, You reminded me of Logan. Or the feel of you. I came to investigate. I'm... A friend." there simple.

She smelt him coming. She had always been able to sense when someone had their attention on her. She drew in a deep breath, threw her nose and deep into her lungs, yes. A him - someone she had met before? It seemed to trigger something; a memory that she had buried. But it was... off a little, not exactly, but close to some memories.
Malcolm. The boy announced himself quickly, although Laura didn't see where he came from, she did her best not to jump. Warnings sounded in her head - she had thought she was keeping a pretty good watched. Hands planted behind her, Laura pulled her legs against her chest and rolled backward, way from the ledge of the roof. She came up on her feel, focusing on the boy casually as she could despite the feeling she should run.
And she might have; the boy was confusing, nervous, fearful. She hated that look when people saw her. But then he just had to talk again. Had to say that name - "Lo..gan." Gorgeous, dark green eyes focused totally on the man, seeing him in a faintly different light. "You know Wolverine? How?"
If he was from S.H.E.I.L.D., she was screwed. She glanced around the roof, looking to see if there were others. Shifting a foot back, she took another deep breath - scenting the wind for others.

The tall man watched her carefully. He was ready to move if she decided to try to grab him. Or run away. one of the two. Then she spoke, and he had to smile. "I know Logan. He's a friend... or well... A friend of a friend. in essence he's a friend." he said simply. "Though we met at a masked ball. Which i believe he was dragged to by the friend in question." he added thoughtfully.
He watched her carefully. "Before you worry, I'm not with S.H.E.I.L.D. I'm... a sort of X-man.... or rogue mutant is the correct term. I don't belong to anyone. Though I'll never be brotherhood." he said musing to himself. He kept himself far enough away from her to keep her safe, at least make her feel that way. he wouldn't ever hurt her, but she didn't know that. He smiled a little. "Your his Clone arn't you? I can... sense it. You both have similar thought processes, but.... different enough. Your less beast like, more human, and a great deal more feminine." he said simply, explaining himself. "What are you doing here in NYC? I mean yeah it's a nice place... but i see you out in the forest. Not here."

"A friend of a friend?" Laura couldn't help the twisted little smile. The man was trying so hard to put her at ease, stumbling over himself as he tried to talk. She didn't have too many problems following his train of thought - he seemed to have been expecting Wolverine and not her, so he was a little off balance. It wasn't until he mentioned S.H.E.I.L.D that she tensed up again.
How could he had known she was thinking that? Unless - her eyes narrowed slightly. A mentalist of some sort, had to be. The more he talked, the more it was clear. He spoke of 'sensing' her being like Wolverine, that clinched it. She suppressed the shudders - she didn't like people poking around in her head. There was, after all, alot of personal stuff in there.
Once he took a chance to breath, Laura replied, doing her best to sooth the edge to her voice. " I see I am no secret... I didn't know he was telling people now."
She batted a bit of her hair out of her face, she watched him for a moment in silence before continuing. "But yea... Clone is the best word for it. You can call me Laura, I guess."Now that he wasn't proving to be a threat, afterall Wolverine was with the X-men right? Still, she kept her guard partly up just in case. Arms folded around herself, she gave a gentle shrug. She'd never been told she seemed 'more human' then Wolverine. Maybe she was gaining more control. "City is easier to hide in, to blend. Forests are awesome if you want to embrace your inner beast, but .... if you are trying to learn to be human, no better place then the crush of good Ol' New York."She thought about it another moment, then focused her startling green eyes completely on Malcolm. It was alot like having a wolf or big cat suddenly finding interest in you. Not a altogether good feeling, but she wasn't hunting him. "Why are you here? Don't then X-men live... you know, someplace else?" WORDS! too lazy to keep count STATUS! complete TAGS! X-23, Mal NOTES! -- INSPIRATION! -- CREDITS! Template By arro @ Caution! Mal watched her. Warily. He nodded. "She's... Interesting. Victoria Crane. You may have heard about SMMO on TV in the last year or so? That's her outfit. Military gal. Smart. Pretty. Very pretty." he grinned. He wouldn't explain it all. Leave that to logan. He deserved SOME trouble. At least in Mal's mind.
Mal shook his head. "he's not. I'm just paying attention. That and He knew my father... and what my father knew, I knew. AND you feel like him. Even children don't feel like their parents." he said simply. He didn't really care if she noticed that he was reading her mind, only the top really. Her surface thoughts.
Her eyes were entrancing. At least that's what the young man thought. "Laura. Pretty name." he smiled a bit. It was a pretty name. He wasn't sure exactly why he liked it... maybe it was those green eyes. He tried to shift as she spoke again. He nodded. "Mk. Good enough for me." he said simply, watching her, as she was watching him. Well sort of. He wasn't unnerved by those eyes, but he was used to being looked at as meat. Girls often thought of him that way. A prize. He'd learned long ago that you NEVER thought of a girl as a prize. That had gotten him smacked by his mother.
He shook his head, crossing his arms slightly, a nervious tention appearing in his stance. "Ah... I.. I'm not an X-man. i don't... Run around saving people. Or get myself killed. I know... Wolverine. I know of the rest... but. Yeah. I grew up here. In NYC. I'm... A local. Live about three blocks away. It's a nice appartment. Why? Do I look like an X-men?"

Laura sensed a little more story behind the friendship between Malcolm and this 'Victoria Crane', but it was clear he had said about all he wanted to about her. The woman's name didn't ring a bell, but her group did. SMMO was on the news at least once a week and, although she didn't know what they did exactly, Laura had remembered the name.
She didn't really know how to feel about the fact he had 'guessed' what she was rather then learning it from Wolverine. Perhaps she would have liked it better if he had learned it from the man who could be counted as her 'father', but then again.... Laura was still trying to sort out what she wanted. She was a little disappointed though. She hid it fairly well, instead lifting a finger and tapping it in the middle of her forehead. "Don't go to deep, you won't like what you find." It was a clear warning, but not a threat.
Breaking eye contact with him, she scanned the roofs around them before refocusing on Mal - force of habit more then anything. The winds shifted, bringing smells from the docks and the lower east side. Blech. Laura wrinkled up her nose at the scent, then shook herself and blinked at the man again.
She couldn't hide the smile though as he stumbled over the explanation of his being in New York. Not a team member but he knew them.... and he was pretty plainly not normal. "No... I guess you don't. But you've seen Wolverine too - does he look like a X-men? They aren't exactly the easiest group to divine out it they aren't in those weird uniforms." She dropped to sit on the roof's upraised edge, calming watching Mal from the distance she had set.
"How... how often do you see him? Wolverine, I mean."
She could have kicked herself. She shouldn't be asking - she was trying not to be drawn to care, to worry, to - "I mean... is he okay? When did you seem him last?"Stupid. She shouldn't have asked, she didn't need to know. It shouldn't have mattered. Cursing herself, Laura all but shot to her feet and stalked toward her bag. "Forget I asked. I can't stay, I have to go." She reached for the back, ready to rush off before she could hear anymore. WORDS! too lazy to keep count STATUS! complete TAGS! Her words made him chuckle. "Top thoughts. When you said Logan, you thought about him. or the meaning of him. What you see as the meaning of him. I don't read deep. i'm not Charles Xavier." he said softly, chiding his dead father. Everyone expected psycics to go crazy. He sighed in frustraition.
Then he nodded. "He's got a... feel about him. Like the rest of the X-men. He's confident, he's... got a righteous feel to him, like the rest of them. They are working for what they believe is right... then again.. I can see what you can't." He said softly, starting to feel confident, and in control.
"I saw him a few days ago. he's fine. More than that I think. Happy." he smiled a bit. "Though part of him hates me. It's quite amusing. But other than that he's doing well. Well as well as anyone who can regenerate that fast, and has lived for over a hundred and fifty years can be." He said thoughtfully.
He saw that for a moment that she was going to leave. "he's like your dad isn't he? Why don't you stay with him? If i had the choice I'd be with my dad... If he... was around." he stopped himself before he got any farther on that train of thought. He'd very likely loose his cool. Bad idea for him.
"Don't go. I'm sure... he'd like to see you. After all, a dad always loves to see his kids."

Her fingers caught up the backpack, her attention on Mal's voice. It was.... good, she guessed, to hear that the man who's DNA created her was doing good. She knew he still held a bit of blame on his own shoulders for what happened to her - forced to be what she was. She was a little jealous though too - that Malcolm had been able to see him.
The moment Malcolm suggested she go to Wolverine, Laura felt a fist in her stomach. Ugh, she was still getting a handle on these emotions. She was quick to shut down the reaction - the clear vision in her mind that Wolverine didn't need her in his life; she'd caused enough problems. "He's better without me. And he's not my Dad - not really."
Laura swung the bag up onto her shoulder, turning to look straight at Malcolm. "Yes - I am his clone. But it wasn't like he offered up his genetics for the project. It was stolen DNA, used without his consent. Not exactly the thing that gives you warm, fuzzy feelings to a child, you know?"
She pushed a bit of hair out of her face, giving a sigh. "And to that that the first time I sought him out it was to try to kill him; because I blamed him for what had happened. I'm pretty sure he is very happy to have me very far from him and the school."

The tall man shook his head. "So that's why your so worried. He's not your dad, but he is." he said softly. "Don't lie to yourself." he said simply.
His blue eyes watched her. Sure he was trying to piss her off a bit. Though not badly, just get her to stop wallowing. "But your still his kid. Your still his child. Even if it wasn't willing, it's like... not knowing you had a kid, then finding out. Doesn't matter that you didn't know, it's still YOUR kid. He's still your dad." the man said simply. his voice even.
"Your sure? Your absolutly sure that he doesn't want to know your safe, or well, or even alive? Ok sure, you can heal as quick as him, but someone cutting off your head will do it. How can you know that? You don't live in his head. You arn't him. You may be his clone, but you are your own person." he said softly his light eyes serious.

Laura pulled up, glaring at the man."If I told you to stay the hell out of my head, Blue-eyes, would you listen?" She was trying to keep things in check. He had said she was more human then Wolverine, but that had been wrong. She wasn't more so - she was less so. A childhood deprived of contact from other, treated like a animal. They left marks, like fingerprints on the soul.
"He isn't my father! I'm a Clone - one he never wanted or needed! I'm a weapon, don't you get that!" She didn't even think; her fist closed in a rush, the familiar pulse of pain shot up her arm as the twinned claws sliced their way out of her flesh. Her healing sealed the wounds swiftly, leaving only trace droplets of blood on the smooth, shining silver finish. It dripped along the curve, falling to the solid roof next to her feet.
She didn't attack though. She started a Malcolm for a long, cold moment with eyes not quite human. The low growl, slightly higher in tone then Wolverine's, but a warning none the less. She fought down the want to attack him - he wasn't a threat, not really. With a jerk, she forced her hand open, the silver twinned talons vanishing from view.
"Look, Buddy... I don't like people poking around in my head. Don't do it again." Her whole body gave a shudder, Laura turning away from Mal to look at the skyline. "Look, I see what you are trying to do, Malcolm. But its not how you are trying to twist it. Its not like I'm the baby from some old girlfriend; I was made from DNA that they stole from Wolverine." Turning to look over her shoulder, her green eyes caught the lights around them. "If it was you, would you want the product of such a violation hanging around?"

"Yes. I'm not reading your thoughts now. I'm just... watching, and... feeling. your pain is human, not animal. That's the difference." he said softly, his eyes half closed for a second. Then they flicked fully open.
Her words and violent action didn't even rock him. Part of him expected it. He was used to feeling Logan's mind, and so he expected her reaction, though he did watch the blood fall. He refrained from catching it, though he could. He kept his sheild up, he always did.
Her words made him nod. "yes. Yes i would. I wouldn't let my child, weather a clone or a true child, be alone. I wouldn't like to be with out any information of that child." his voice was soft, and careful, as he stepped closer to her. Careful Mal. Careful. You don't know how she'll react to that. "You aren't him. Your different. And you are no weapon. you are human, and a mutant. If your a weapon, then i'm a super one. And you aren't a tool any more. Just like logan isn't." he took another, keeping his sheild around him.

Laura glanced down at her hand for a moment before wiping the knuckles against her hand against her jeans. A little blood wouldn't show on the abused fabric, it was better to have it on her pants then painting her knuckles.
Mal's words, some how, didn't surprise Laura. She wasn't sure if he was saying it just to try to gain her trust, or if he was being truthful in how he would react in Wolverine's place. She turned totally around, facing him, and found he had been closing the distance to her. Why? Raven's wing toned hair fanned over her shoulder as she tilted her head and peered at him with curious eyes.
"You are wrong you know; I am him. In the most basic ways, there is very little that makes me different."
But it was there, a soft smile with a turned up right side as she fought to relax her guard. He was trying so hard to comfort her - did he think she would jump from the ledge? "Different isn't always good, Blue Eyes. You know that as well as I do." She didn't move toward her; she didn't think that he would want that. After a moment of watching him, she shook her head. "Okay, I give up - why is my going to find Wolverine so important to you?"

He shrugged. "And i'm only a little different from my own father." he said simply. "You think like your parents. But only if you want to. Only if you believe it. I'm not my father. I'm me. Malcolm. not anyone else. your Laura, even if you are a clone you have a different story to tell." he said softly, his blue eyes seroius. A voice came to him. Son. your starting to sound like me. he ignored Charles Xavier's voice. I have to dad. She need's help.
Her continued to watch the dark haired beauty before him. "Different may not be better, but it's better than nothing. Then bein' the same as everyone else." he said softly. He was caught in her green eyes again. he liked them. But then she spoke again. Thank god. "Becuase i've spent the last year wishing i could have said go by to my father. And because you don't want to do that. And I like seeing at least a little happiness in the world. A happy eneding... at least for the moment.

Laura didn't have to be a empath to hear the pain in his voice, to read it on his face. He hid it well, he really did. But she could smell it on the air, and read it into her words. "I'm not sure Wolverine would think of it as a happy ending if I showed up on his doorstep again. But he'd probably be happy if it didn't involve me trying to cut him into tiny pieces."
There was humor there; but truth too. Their first encounter had left a lasting impression on both 'father' and 'daughter'. She thought on his words for a moment, then recalled something from the start of this meeting of the minds. "For whats its worth.. I think you'd make a good X-man, Malcolm. You have the heart for it - even if you don't want to do it. Or you wouldn't have stayed here and tried to talk to me." She met it kindly, honestly.
After a moment, she dropped her eyes from his and sighed. "I'll... think about seeing him. Okay?" She shrugged a little, then glanced back up at the blond man and shot him a stunning smile. "I can't levitate or whatever you did to get up here - so I have to do mundane stuff like Buses. Plus I'm not even sure where that school he hangs out at IS anymore.. but I'll think about it, alright?"
Somewhere above them, thunder rolled. Wind tossed Laura's hair, slightly - she turned her face into it and closed her eyes, inhaling the smells on the breeze. The city... the people... "Weather's changing; thunderstorms. Big one, if you feel it. I better find someplace to crash out of the rains before it breaks." Opening her eyes, she looked back at Mal.
"Thanks for the talk, Blueeyes..... Malcolm." Larua corrected herself with a slight grin still on her lips. "Maybe I'll see you around."
